To understand hypnosis, it's important to first understand our unconscious and conscious minds.
Unconscious Mind The unconscious mind holds all of our memories – every thought, every event, and the emotional charge associated with those thoughts and events. Additionally contained in the unconscious mind are our habits and beliefs. And it's important to know that the unconscious mind does not discern whether a belief is based on a truth or a falsehood. Many times as we examine our beliefs we will find that those that have been holding us back are frequently false.
Our unconscious mind also controls our body processes - all of those things that happen to keep our body operational without us having to think about them, such as the heart beating, lungs breathing, and blood pumping.
Since hypnosis works with the unconscious mind it can be a valuable tool to improve what resides there. It can be used to manage memories so that we are able to view them in a new and better way. We can establish new habits and new beliefs about ourselves that make our lives better. It can also assist in the body processes functioning better.
The conscious mind is where we do our present-moment thinking. These are the thoughts we are aware of in our day-to-day lives. The conscious mind is logical and analytical. It tells us what is and is not possible.
You can think of the conscious mind as a gatekeeper of the unconscious mind. The conscious mind functions in a way that preserves our beliefs so that we maintain consistent behavior and responses. It does this by processing information in a way that supports and strengthens our current beliefs and, in effect, discarding information that is in opposition to those beliefs.
Let's take for example a child who, at a very young age, is told by a a parent that their art work looks like chicken scratchings. Now the parent may have been kidding, but the child takes it to heart, and from that point on believes they cannot draw. That child will then look for information in the environment that confirms their lack of artistic talent. A sibling's joking comment about their art work will be taken as confirmation, whereas a school friend's compliment about an art project may be discarded as the friend simply trying to be nice. What Then Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state in which the mind is highly focused on a particular thought or feeling, to the exclusion of all other things. In this state the conscious part of our mind, the gatekeeper, quiets down, which allows access to the unconscious mind.
It’s a state we experience many times in our daily lives, such as when we read a book that captures our complete attention and transports us out of awareness of our immediate surroundings.
